Restarting a Blog

This is one of those obligatory1 “Here’s my new blog”-type posts. I was at a concert this past Friday, and remembered to back when I kept this blog somewhat updated. Like a lot of people, I’ve been unhappy with the way I interact with social media for a long time, but I also wanted a space to collect my thoughts in a less-formal way that essays, but that still made me write on a more regular basis. Everything new is old again, or rather “Everything old is new again,” and after a couple YouTube recommendations about the “indie web,” I decided to revive the old blog. Since I want to keep control of my own space online, I’m not going to go for one of those GeoCities throwbacks (except maybe just for nostalgia’s sake); I think it’s only a matter of time until history repeats itself and the indie-web kids rediscover blogging.

So, for this old blog, it’ll be basically what it was before: less-formal/academic that just gets me writing on a regular basis. I’ll keep my other sites for more curated things.

Also, on a whim I’ve decided to make use of my typewriter collection and type this out on my teal Olivetti Lettera 32. I don’ t have a large typewriter collection (5 so far, and only 2 of those work), but I thought that would be a fun change of pace. These old machines need to be used to keep going, so this should help with that. I’ve got a cheap Chinese-made Royal from about 2012 that I can also use, a Smith-Corona desktop model that I need to put back together, a Royal electric that I think just needs a good cleaning (the motor works, but some of the type bars don’t strike the ribbon), and an IBM Selectric 1 whose motor makes a terrible clacking sound. (I did finally find a couple repair manuals for it, so I hope I can get it working). I’ll include an image of the page I typed this on for fun’s sake (along with edits/revisions like this).

That’s all for now. Next up will be a concert write-up. Bye!

  1. I actually don’t know if this is really “obligatory,” but it’s a start at least.
